The 2011 BAFTA Film Awards is tonight which calls for a gratuitous blog about it. The most important thing is obviously the return of Jonathan Ross to the BBC to host the coverage. I at least, have missed him – and Film 2010 has frankly gone downhill since.
But enough about Wossy, what of the awards themselves? Here is a list to all the nominees and below are my picks for who I think will win, based on the films I’ve seen hyperbole, hearsay and assumptions of voters prejudices:
Best Film:
The Social Network (shock result)
Outstanding British Film:
The King’s Speech
Outstanding British Debut:
Monsters
Best Director:
David Fincher
Best Original Screenplay:
The King’s Speech
Best Adapted Screenplay:
The Social Network
Best Foreign Language Film:
Biutiful
Best Animated Film:
Toy Story 3 (Surest thing in history)
Best Actor:
Colin Firth
Best Actress:
Natalie Portman (I’d put Hailee Steinfeld as an outside bet for True Grit)
Best Supporting Actor:
Geoffrey Rush
Best Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams
Original Music:
Inception (bbbbbwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaammmmmmm)
Cinematography:
True Grit (could be 127 hours, but I’ve not seen it, trailer was impressively vibrant)
Editing:
Inception
Production Design:
Black Swan
Costume Design:
True Grit (yes, I’m betting on no dresses winning)
Sound:
Inception (bwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmm)
Special Visual Effects:
Black Swan (taking a punt on this one as it will probably be Inception, I would say possibly controversially Black Swan has the more impressive subtle digital effects whereas Inception’s “old school” approach to effects was refreshing and mesmerising)

Alice & Wonderland
Best animated shot:
Thursday
Best Short:
Turning
Rising Star:
Gemma Arterton
